Pretoria: Van Schaik (forthcoming 2023). • Dr Marcel Nagar has reviewed 2 journal articles in POLITIKON. Challenges • We received tremendous support from the NRF, however, we were unable to support all students under the Chairs supervision through the grant. We continue to face budgetary problems. • Due to Lockdown and Covid-19, conferences that staff would have attended were cancelled. • One of the research staff commented that while working from home, with a new-born has presented its challenges, and adjustments had to be made to working patterns during the pandemic. • The online lecture by the Georgian Ambassador to address post graduate students of UJ on Diplomacy and Georgia/Russia relations, arranged by Prof Georghiou, unfortunately had to be cancelled due to a lack of interest. Teaching • 2021 – Dr Otto co-taught the Honours module Theory and Practice of Diplomacy with Prof Chris Landsberg. Online. • As agreed between the Dept of Politics & IR and SARCHi, Prof Georghiou taught the “Social Science Methods & Political Society” course (POL3AA3) to about 257 third-year students in the first semester of 2021. • 2021 – Prof Georghiou taught Research Methodology to 3rd year students in Politics and African Studies. Online • 2021 – Prof Kikaya Bin Karube has taught the following courses at the University of Kinshasa, Faculty of Arts, Department of Information and Communication Sciences. Current Affairs Issues Seminar (Séminaire d’Actualité): 4th year Information and Communication Sciences Students. In-depth Studies of <international Relations (Lecture Approfondie des Relations Internationales: 4th year Journalism students. The Foreign Policy of the Democratic Republic of Congo (Politique Etrangère de la République Démocratique du Congo: 5th year Journalism students. Political Communication Seminar (Séminaire de Communication Politique): Masters Degree candidates Collaborations: • Prof Landsberg, Prof Georghiou, Dr Otto, Dr Shilaho and Dr Nagar have participated in the BA-grant writing workshops with Leeds-Beckett University and the University of Derby. • Dr Otto has been collaborating with a colleague from Germany on a book project. • Collaborated with International IDEA and the SADC Parliamentary Forum on the Continental Study on Enhancing Effectiveness of Parliaments in Africa During Crises: Lessons from the COVID-19 Pandemic. Contributed the South African case study findings of the Continental Study. • In collaboration with the Georgian Ambassador, Mr Beka Dvali, an MOU, initiated in 2020, between UJ and the Caucuses University in Tbilisi is about to be finalised for signature, hopefully early in 2022. The prospect of student and staff exchanges between our two institutions is now a strong possibility. • CA Georghiou visited (and subsequent dinner) with the Pakistani High Commissioner and his spouse. The High Commissioner wants to address staff and students at UJ. Student Supervision • From the point of view of student throughput, SARChi continued to perform above the target set by the NRF. 5 doctoral candidates have completed and handed in for examination. One doctoral student from CBE is also expected to hand in soon. One doctoral candidate graduated in 2021. One Masters candidate has handed in for examination. Four Masters Students graduated in 2021. The four honours students have completed, with a number of these students achieving excellent marks in their long essays. • There are 7 Masters students that have been supervised in 2021. 2 have graduated. The others will continue in 2022. • SARChi staff continue to supervise honours students on their long essay. This year there were 5 and 1 has graduated. Workshops/Seminars/Webinars All these were conducted online: • Webinar: Reflections on Leadership Development in a Post-Conflict Country, the DRC, was presented by His Excellency J Kabila Kabange, Former President of the DRC. The webinar was well attended and a huge success. • Proposal writing workshop • Presenting your research workshop • Correct referencing and academic integrity workshop • Writing for publication workshop • Using stats / quantitative methods workshop • Dr Otto attended several workshops hosted by the IORA Academic group across the year, engaging on
