The various awards received much media attention ranging from local and national newspapers, social media radio stations. The MLSO obtained a donation of R110 000.00 from the Trust vir Onderrig in Afrikaans to support the prizes as well as the 51st NP van Wyk Louw Commemorative Lecture. The lecture focussed on new literary voices in Afrikaans. Heindrich Wyngaard interviewed Prof Karen de Wet from LanCSAL. A substantial number of young and upcoming authors writing in Afrikaans and its biggest variety, Kaaps, contributed videos and/or recordings of their work to the interview. These included authors such as Churchill Naudé, Nathan Trantraal, Bibi Slippers, Lynthia Julius, Ryan Pedro, Ronelda Kamfer, Reënwolf, Jolyn Phillips, Pieter Odendaal, Shirmoney Rhode, Fourie Botha, Veronique Jephtas and Loftus Marais. The lecture was broadcasted on DStv channel 149 in December. The MLSO offered institutional support to assist the Registrar with issues about UJ’s new Language Policy. The head of the MLSO, Prof Marné Pienaar represented at the USAF Language Colloquium on 28 and 29 September on the New Language Policy Framework. We also engaged with the Language in Education Monitoring Tool on behalf of UJ. This tool is administered by the Pan South African Language Board (PanSALB) to measure the implementation of multilingualism in higher education. The head of the MLSO is also ex officio a member of the Institutional Forum as well as UJ’s Transformation Committee. The MLSO remains committed to enhancing institutional multilingualism at UJ and hope to expand its activities surrounding awareness in 2022. The Department of Communication and Media Introduction The departments of Communication Studies (CMS) and Journalism, Film and Television (FTV) merged in January 2021 into the Department of Communication and Media. The new department consists of 161 permanent staff (of which 10 are permanent lecturing staff), a number of temp staff members and four postdoctoral research fellows. There are two research associates and 10 senior research associates, many of whom are well known in their respective fields, examples here are Professors Thomas Tufte and Hopeton Dunn. The department also houses the Faculty appointed Distinguished Professor Keyan Tomaselli. Staff highlights • One promotion to Associate Professor (Shanade Barnabas). • Two members of staff (Pier Paolo Frassinelli and Shanade Barnabas) received an NRF rating (C1 and Y2 respectively). • Shanade Barnabas has been accepted into the prestigious Future Professors Programme, an initiative of the Department of Higher Education and Training. • Pier Paolo Frassinelli was appointed as Visiting Professor at JIAS and as a Writing Fellow at the Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Studies, July-December 2021. • Pier Paolo Frassinelli re-appointed as external member of the PhD in Human Relations, Department of Education, Psychology and Communication, University of Bari, 2021-2024 1 The untimely death of Professor PierPaolo Frassinelli’s in November of 2021 marked a great loss to the department. Prof Frassinelli’s teaching excellence and prolific research will be greatly missed. His loss brings us down from 17 to 16 staff members.
