THRIVE: 23 Introducing himself as one of the program directors for the STH 50th Anniversary celebratory event in 2019, Donald Brain described his journey with the school as “long and fruitful”. After qualifying from the Hotel School of the Technikon Witwatersrand and working in the hotel industry, he joined the staff of this institution in 1989. As a student and eventually a junior staff member hehad severalmentors, namely: Dr Reinie Mornet, Felix Sullivan, Roy Wilkins, and Pieter Viljoen. He began my lecturing career as a restaurant practical lecturer at the Smit Street campus and moved into lecturing beverage and event management. In his words he says, “I was privileged to be involved in the development and the opening of the present (STH) facilities in 2005, and see this wonderful school grow in stature and reputation.” Delivering his final speech to colleagues and students at a farewell function held in his honour, Brain paid tribute to key women in his life, his mother, stepmother, Betsie Pelling and Anne Taylor. He further cited amongst his other key achievements, his academic achievements which include the attainment of a master’s degree in 2016 and being part of the Soweto Wine Festival. “To single out a single moment of my time here as a lecturer is extremely difficult, as there are so many.
