38 FACULTY OF HUMANITIES ANNUAL REPORT 2021 Whatsapp groups were set up for every module including lecturer and tutors. This was coordinated by Mr Elmon Moloutsi, our senior tutor. These platforms proved to be very effective although sometimes intrusive. Students were guided on how to be professional on these platforms and the majority conducted themselves according to the common shared rules. Student initiatives included regular motivational voice notes to third year students organised by the student assistant on APB campus, Babalwa Mbono. The Students’ Public Relations Association (SPRA) assisted with some online events and networking opportunities. The power of networks was evident when a senior student was experiencing a crisis and we could all use our different networks to assist the student and her family. Nompumeleo Mjikeliso (third year PR student) was part of the Young Voices on the Judges Panel for PRISA PRISM Awards. She was mentored by Mrs Melanie Joubert. Looking forward to road ahead With the uncertainty still prevailing, colleagues commented that they will focus on improving their online and blended teaching approaches for the 2022 academic year. Another focus will be placed on ensuring continued research growth through the appointment of Post Doctoral Fellows (PDFs) and new Research Associates (RAs) to assist with writing accredited research units and research projects. A call will be put out early in the new year for PDF and Research Associate applications. Attention will also be given to improve the poor success rate of doctoral and research masters students. Post graduate supervision is of great concern and with more senior staff members (6 APs and 4 SL) this will be possible. An important aspect highlighted during this COVID-19 period is the need to support colleagues in maintaining their mental health and wellness. Loss, stress, financial burdens and health issues has become a reality to most and our staff and students are all living with many challenges. We need to find ways to support each other in practical ways and assist with dealing with all that life has to offer on this journey of mountains and valleys.
