Faculty of Humanities | Annual Report 2021

33 Shanade Barnabas, HOD Communication and Media Siyabonga Nkosi, winner of the Best Tutor Award in 2021, as voted by students and peers Nevertheless, the number of pipeline modules will increase in 2022. This is due to the first year of phasing out the third-year offerings in our legacy CMS. Plans for 2022 • With the success of the 3rd year curricular revision in 2021, the department will embark on the same exercise for the Honours modules in 2022. • The Staff Research Round Table will be supplemented by at least two staff writing sessions to further build a research culture in the department. • Second year of writing retreats for PG students to assist with throughput (x2 writing retreats planned for the year to supplement weekly writing sessions that began in 2021). • To work together with LanCSAL, St Anthony’s College and the African Studies Centre, Oxford on a mini-conference titled ‘Radio in Southern Africa: Past and Present’. • Antoinette Hoffman will register for her PhD. • Shelley Barry will submit her PhD. • Shelley Barry and Sarah Chiumbu will apply for promotion. • New hires will grow the currently understaffed department, especially the Film and Television cohort of teaching staff (which is currently only Shelley Barry). Last word on the merger The departments of Communication Studies (CMS) and Journalism, Film and Television (FTV) merged into the Department of Communication and Media in a year of remote work. This is a feat not to be taken lightly. Staff are to be commended for their collaborations, consistent dedication to students and effort to become one.
