24 FACULTY OF HUMANITIES ANNUAL REPORT 2021 Prof Fritz Nganje continues to provide excellent mentorship to undergraduate students. Dr Ndzendze has initiated a book review group which provides financial incentives to students to write and publish book reviews in politics, IR, sociological, gender studies and other related journals. We also successfully proposed the introduction of the 4IR and Digital Policy Research Unit (4DPRU, ran by Dr Ndzendze) as well as obtained funding for the BRICS@UJ Project (ran by Prof Zondi). These two initiatives cover the specialised themes of digital policy and BRICS studies and have obtained seed funding from internal and external sources. These two initiatives are also umbrellas 2 new journals published by the UJ Press that will first publish in 2022 and seek accreditation by DHET within 2-3 years. These will be vehicles for training students and postdoc fellows to be more publication-active as well as ground them in managing journals. Both are served by postdoc fellows as managing editors. We are also completing 3 MoUs with educational institutions and industry for the benefit of out students through funded research and internships. We look forward to creating and facilitating opportunities for all our students, staff and research and visiting associates in 2022! H.E. LanCSAL Teaching LanCSAL continues to deliver high quality teaching. We are constantly updating, redeveloping, and evolving our curricula. For example, Classical Culture and Mythologies (CLC) started this year with a three-year curriculum redesign and decolonisation programme, introducing African and other third-world mythologies and cultures into the curriculum. Dr Cindy Ramhurry has introduced the use of online textbooks to many of the Applied Communicative Skills (ACS) modules. In addition to redesigning curricula, there have been other innovative initiatives. Dr Tracey McCormick, for example, developed a series of comic strips that communicate the content of her course in an exciting way (see picture).
